About the role
Role Overview
The Executive Director is the association’s chief staff officer, reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. The role is responsible for the overall management and direction of the organization, including execution of Board policies, program implementation, security measures, financial affairs, and leadership of staff and outside partners.
Responsibilities
Board Administration and Support
- Plan, coordinate, and attend Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings
- Prepare agendas, reports, and supporting materials
- Record, distribute, and maintain official Board minutes
- Keep the Board and Executive Committee informed on key matters affecting operations
- Recommend policies, programs, and administrative procedures to support association objectives
- Execute Board decisions and assignments
Advocacy
- Provide local, state, and federal advocacy in collaboration with BOMA New York’s lobbyists, members, industry partners, and BOMA International
- Work with technical committees to shape the advocacy agenda
- Engage membership to gather input and support for advocacy priorities
Committee Support
- Provide liaison and staff support to committee chairs and committees (e.g., Codes and Regulations, Energy and Sustainability, Business and Market Strategy, Nominating, Advocacy, Emergency Preparedness)
- Ensure committee decisions and recommendations are communicated to the Board for review
- Formulate and communicate policies/procedures for standing and ad hoc committees with the Board
Strategic Planning & Communications
- Partner with the Board to chart the association’s course and meet member needs
- Set the tone for and approve outside communications, advancing the association’s voice through advocacy, social media, and strategic messaging
Requirements
- Ability to lead overall association operations, including staff/contractor and financial management
- Strong capability in Board support, governance processes, and strategic planning with a Board
- Experience/competence in advocacy and stakeholder engagement at local, state, and federal levels
Nice-to-Haves
- Familiarity with commercial real estate and/or the property management ecosystem
- Experience supporting industry committees and translating recommendations to Board decisions
