About the role

Role Overview

Engineering Team Lead (player-coach) at AWeber in a remote-first, AI-first environment. You will build and lead a small team of engineers who design agents and agentic engineering systems, review agent-generated work, and coordinate delivery across the codebase—while staying hands-on in the code.

Responsibilities

Lead from inside the work: design solutions, review agent-generated output (especially on risky paths), and ship hard parts yourself.
People leadership: run 1:1s, grow engineers’ careers, and own hiring, reviews, and team development.
Delivery & quality ownership: set delivery direction, break down ambiguous work, ensure commitments are met, and maintain the team’s quality bar.
Improve team execution: coach engineers on how they verified work, unblock stalled items (e.g., migrations), and decide what to take off the plate so the team stays healthy.
Cross-team alignment: carry team priorities into engineering forums and communicate openly with engineers, peers, product partners, and leadership.
AI-first engineering standards: raise standards for reviewing agent-generated work and emphasize verification and trust as throughput constraints.

Requirements

7+ years hands-on software engineering experience with strong backend depth (Python) or frontend depth (React, TypeScript, or modern JavaScript frameworks).
Judgment to review & improve both engineers’ code and agent-generated code.
1+ year in a technical lead/team lead/technical project leadership role with mentoring and growth experience (open to a strong first-time people manager who has acted as a de facto lead).
Experience owning delivery: setting direction, clarifying ambiguous work, holding to commitments, and driving projects to completion.
Experience designing solutions using AI development tools and coding assistants; ability to elevate team review standards for agent-generated work.
Strong familiarity across the stack: Python, React, TypeScript, plus databases, caching strategies, UNIX development tools, and deploying to AWS or other cloud infrastructure.
Ability to own people work: performing reviews, interviewing/evaluating candidates, and developing careers.
