Engineering Manager, Notifications

Role Overview

Discord is seeking a technical, hands-on, infrastructure-minded Engineering Manager to lead the Notifications team within the Growth organization. The team owns the platform and infrastructure powering every notification Discord sends, including orchestration, the in-app notifications center, and user-facing notification settings and client experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of full-stack engineers operating business-critical notification systems at massive consumer scale
• Build and operate the notifications platform:
  • Elixir services, Python backends
  • Pub/sub and streaming pipelines
  • Kubernetes infrastructure
• Set technical direction to ensure reliability and scaling as volume and complexity grow
• Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to define and execute the notifications roadmap
• Use experimentation and metrics to improve:
  • notification engagement
  • retention
  • long-term user trust
• Hire, coach, and instill engineering best practices to grow a high-performing team
• Collaborate with other engineering teams and leadership on platform primitives and strategic planning

Requirements

• 5+ years experience as a Software Engineer, with significant backend/infrastructure experience at scale
• 2+ years experience as an Engineering Manager
• Comfort owning production systems built with Elixir, Python, pubsub/streaming pipelines, and Kubernetes
• Strong intuition for reliability, throughput, and cost at scale
• Experience partnering closely with cross-functional stakeholders (Product, Design, Data Science, engineering)
• Proven ability to grow engineers and drive team success
• Strong ownership mindset—able to engage deeply in technical decisions
• Familiarity with building a culture of fast iteration and high-quality delivery

Bonus / Nice-to-Haves

• Experience leading teams owning shared platforms/primitives consumed by others
• Experience shipping push notifications or re-engagement systems, including deliverability, throttling, and policy considerations
• Full-stack experience across frontend and backend
• Demonstrated data-driven impact via experimentation
• Experience driving engagement and long-term retention through messaging/re-engagement
• Understanding of the gaming industry and being a Discord user
