Engineering Manager, Metadata

Role Overview

Engineering Manager for the Metadata team within the dbt platform at Fivetran. You’ll lead a team that owns the metadata layer—covering the Discovery API, catalog, lineage, and run history services—so customers can understand, trust, and act on what their data is doing.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of software engineers: hiring, onboarding, coaching, career development, and regular 1:1s
• Own project delivery against the quarterly plan and be accountable for service reliability and performance (e.g., uptime and latency targets)
• Review technical designs and code, providing feedback grounded in deep understanding of the Metadata product area and architecture
• Drive technical quality: manage incidents, bugs, tech debt, and post-mortems within SLA and metric targets
• Partner with product and business stakeholders on planning; maintain a realistic, prioritized backlog with a high completion rate
• Communicate engineering vision/strategy and the team’s business impact to adjacent teams
• Ensure engineering processes (e.g., FDLC) are implemented and consistently followed
• Delegate effectively, build autonomy, and foster a positive, high-trust culture
• Address performance issues and conflict promptly and fairly
• Ensure the team uses AI tooling to accelerate development and to help author/review SDLC artifacts (e.g., TDDs, PRDs, post-mortems, test plans)
