Engineering Manager, Maps & Search

Role Overview

Engineering Manager responsible for leading a high-impact engineering team building and scaling a world-class Maps & Search experience across web and mobile. You’ll combine people leadership with hands-on engineering to improve speed, relevance, and reliability of a high-traffic search platform serving millions of users, including opportunities to shape AI-powered discovery.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction, execution, and growth of a team supporting a critical search & discovery platform.
• Lead, mentor, and grow engineers (hiring, onboarding, coaching, feedback, and career development).
• Stay hands-on: architecture discussions, code reviews, technical decisions, debugging, and complex problem-solving.
• Drive architecture for scalability, reliability, and performance of high-throughput search.
• Improve search quality across relevance, ranking, retrieval, and latency.
• Define and deliver technical roadmaps with product and design; translate business goals into scalable solutions.
• Lead initiatives from concept through production with strong quality, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Explore and implement AI-powered discovery (intelligent ranking, LLM-driven workflows).
• Establish engineering best practices for system design, development processes, and operational maturity.
• Support incident response, capacity planning, and reliability improvements for production systems.
• Communicate technical strategies and trade-offs to engineering, product stakeholders, and leadership.
• Foster a collaborative culture focused on innovation, ownership, and continuous learning.

Requirements

• 8+ years professional software engineering experience, including significant senior/staff-level exposure.
• 2+ years managing engineering teams and developing high-performing engineers.
• Proven experience leading teams responsible for search, relevance, ranking, retrieval, or discovery systems.
• Strong search fundamentals: indexing, ranking, performance optimization, and user intent.
• Deep expertise with TypeScript, Node.js, and React; strong full-stack understanding.
• Experience designing/operating scalable microservice architectures in cloud-native environments.
• Strong knowledge of GraphQL, event-driven architectures, Kafka, databases, and distributed systems.
• Experience with: PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, AWS, Kubernetes, Lambda, Redis.
