Engineering Manager (Machine Learning Platform)

Role Overview

You’ll join Affirm as an Engineering Manager for the Machine Learning Platform. You will lead platform engineers, set and execute the team roadmap, and ensure the ML platform enables Affirm’s ML priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of platform engineers with strong people leadership and technical guidance for ML infrastructure.
• Collaborate with senior ICs and engineering leadership to define and execute the roadmap for ML training & serving.
• Drive delivery and operational health for the infrastructure, balancing:
  • reliability
  • developer experience
  • performance
  • cost
• Evaluate and adopt modern ML infrastructure capabilities.
• Recruit, coach, and develop high-performing platform engineers.

Requirements

• Strong cross-functional leadership and ability to lead through ambiguity.
• Proven track record delivering platforms/infrastructure that improve engineering or ML productivity and impact.
• Familiarity with modern ML workloads, including:
  • deep learning
  • transformer architectures
  • large-scale training/serving
• Strong systems thinking and experience partnering on architectural trade-offs.
• 7+ years of industry experience in software and/or ML engineering, including:
  • 2+ years managing engineers
  • meaningful hands-on software engineering experience
• Experience recruiting, coaching, and developing engineers across career stages.
• Technical degree (or equivalent practical experience).
• Solid experience building and operating production ML or distributed systems infrastructure, with hands-on experience in at least one of:
  • model training
  • model serving
  • deployment workflows
  • GPU infrastructure
• Solid understanding of ML data needs (training datasets, data quality, reproducibility, evaluation data).

Nice to Have

• Experience applying ML modeling.
