Engineering Manager (Machine Learning Platform)

Role overview

Join Affirm as an Engineering Manager for the Machine Learning Platform. You will lead a team of platform engineers, set and execute the roadmap, and ensure the platform reliably supports Affirm’s ML priorities.

Key missions / responsibilities

• Lead and manage platform engineers, providing coaching and development across career stages.
• Collaborate with senior ICs and engineering leadership to define and execute the roadmap for ML training and serving.
• Drive delivery and operational health of the infrastructure, balancing:
  • Reliability
  • Developer experience
  • Performance
  • Cost
• Evaluate and adopt modern ML infrastructure capabilities.
• Recruit and develop high-performing platform engineering talent.

Requirements

• Strong systems thinking and ability to partner with senior ICs on architectural trade-offs.
• Experience recruiting, coaching, and developing engineers.
• Track record delivering platforms/infrastructure that improve engineering productivity and/or ML team impact.
• Familiarity with modern ML workloads, including:
  • Deep learning
  • Transformer architectures
  • Large-scale training and serving
• Solid understanding of ML data needs, including:
  • Training datasets
  • Data quality
  • Reproducibility
  • Evaluation data
• Strong experience building and operating production ML or distributed systems infrastructure, with hands-on experience in at least one of:
  • Model training
  • Model serving
  • Deployment workflows
  • GPU infrastructure
• 7+ years of industry experience in software and/or ML engineering, including 2+ years managing engineers and meaningful hands-on software engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration and ability to lead through ambiguity.

• Experience with applied ML modeling.
