Engineering Manager (Internal Developer Platform)

Role Overview

Engineering Manager for the Internal Developer Platform at Chainguard. Lead a people-first, technically credible team that builds the systems, tooling, automation, and workflows that improve engineering productivity across the company.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a mature, highly experienced team of engineers (including principal engineers) to improve productivity and operational excellence.
• Own and evolve software delivery systems to ensure builds, testing, releases, and deployments are fast, reliable, secure, and scalable.
• Drive operational excellence using SLOs, observability, automation, and capacity planning.
• Partner with application teams, security teams, and engineering leadership to understand developer needs and prioritize platform investments.
• Stay technically engaged: be able to read and occasionally contribute to code (not a pure people management role).

Requirements

• Open to Manager or Senior Manager depending on experience.
• Manager level: minimum 2–3+ years engineering management experience.
• Senior Manager level: 5–10+ years engineering management experience with an upward trajectory.
• Proven experience managing senior/principal-level engineering talent.
• Technical credibility to support the platform (occasional coding contributions expected).
• Strong coaching, communication, and organizational skills.
• Domain understanding and appreciation for the open source and security world.
• Background in platform engineering, SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure.

Nice to Have / Preferred

• Experience building and operating Internal Developer Platforms and “golden path” tooling.
• Experience with incident management, SLOs, observability, capacity planning, and operational excellence.
• Strong Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure experience.
• Deep experience with GitHub and/or GitLab administration, workflows, and CI/CD systems.
• Familiarity with infrastructure automation and GitOps workflows.
• Experience in infrastructure/security companies (e.g., DigitalOcean, Rackspace).
• SRE management experience.
• Experience with software supply chain security or security-focused organizations.
• Background in Linux distributions / OS-level systems.
