Role overview
Engineering Manager for Data Foundations at GitLab. You will lead and grow a high-performing engineering team responsible for a core data platform that ingests, processes, persists, and queries data streams generated across GitLab. You’ll also expand scope into classic search as part of the Data Foundations organization.
Responsibilities
- Hire, manage, and enable a high-performing engineering team for the Data Insights Platform (DIP).
- Partner with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Data, and other Engineering teams to evolve a platform that lives inside GitLab with minimal external services.
- Own and drive delivery for initiatives including:
- DIP roadmap and Platform Insights initiatives
- Siphon
- Query API integrations
- Classic search initiatives
- Self-service reporting foundations
- Provide architecture leadership for high-throughput, multi-component distributed systems, including:
- ingestion, buffering, enrichment, replication, storage, querying
- backpressure handling, isolation
- production operations across multiple deployment models
- Guide production execution across deployments spanning GitLab.com, Dedicated, Self-Managed, and Cells-based models.
Technical/architecture focus
- Drive architecture and execution across a platform built around:
- stateless ingesters
- Siphon CDC replication
- NATS/JetStream buffering
- enrichment pipelines
- ClickHouse-backed storage
- a Query API interfacing with the GitLab Rails monolith
Requirements
- Deep distributed systems knowledge.
- Comfort going beyond people management into architecture of high-throughput multi-component data systems.
- Ability to balance technical guidance with people leadership.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Product/Design and peer engineering leadership.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience delivering data/analytics/search platforms with strong production operations in multiple deployment models.
- Ability to leverage AI as a core productivity multiplier in daily workflows.
