About the role
Role overview
Engineering Manager for Create:Source Code within GitLab’s Source Code engineering domain. You’ll lead people management and help deliver a world-class repository experience by building and scaling a high-performing engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Foster engineering excellence across scalability, database performance, fault tolerance, and world-class web accessibility and performance.
- Hire, onboard, and develop engineers who embody GitLab’s values and take strong ownership of outcomes.
- Manage and improve agile, remote, async workflows to enable iterative delivery of platform improvements and key features.
- Partner cross-functionally with Product Management, Product Design, and other engineering teams to align frontend/backend architecture to business goals and user needs.
- Maintain visibility into execution health, including:
- bug backlog health
- stalled MRs
- milestone misses
- Proactively address delivery risks and delays before they require leadership escalation.
- Run regular 1:1s, deliver continuous feedback, and coach engineers to support growth.
Requirements
- Substantial leadership experience managing high-performing engineering teams, with hands-on technical competency for architectural guidance and mentorship.
- Strong technical credibility across backend and frontend work.
- A passion for version control, with deep understanding of Git and awareness of current industry trends.
- Ability to build alignment and consensus across Product, Design, Engineering, and Infrastructure.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to drive decisions and execution even when it’s easier to defer/deprioritize.
Nice-to-haves / Preferred technical background
- Direct production experience building enterprise applications with:
- Ruby on Rails (or similar)
- modern frontend frameworks such as Vue.js, React, or Angular.
