Engineering Manager, Core Events

Role Overview

Engineering Manager for Stripe’s Core Events in the infrastructure organization. You’ll lead teams building and operating Stripe’s event infrastructure: a reliable, low-latency backbone for capturing, routing, filtering, transforming, and persisting billions of events daily.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect org & culture: Design and scale a high-leverage engineering organization; define “Elite Engineering” and operational rigor for infrastructure teams.
• Vision & strategy: Set multi-year scope, vision, and goals with minimal guidance; anticipate industry trends and influence Stripe long-range planning (including online storage layer).
• Operational excellence: Instill rigorous thinking and craftsmanship; ensure proactive resilience via observability, backpressure control, and graceful degradation.
• Bridge engineering & business: Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to align deep engineering needs with global business growth forecasts.
• Build the future team: Invest in development across levels; focus on talent, hiring, coaching, and elevating other engineering managers.

Requirements

• Leadership: 5+ years in technical engineering management, overseeing strategic projects.
• Systems expertise: Deep background in distributed systems and experience operating Tier 0 infrastructure at massive scale.
• Product mindset: Ability to connect engineering abstractions to product strategy and developer enablement.
• Strategic navigation: Manage through ambiguity; make trade-offs among reliability, efficiency, and long-term architectural health.
• Curiosity & humility: Strong interest in the underlying operational “nuts-and-bolts” (e.g., global money movement) and willingness to keep learning.
• Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Shipped and operated critical infrastructure (e.g., database internals or related) with significant responsibility over critical data and/or funds.
• Proven ability to define scope and vision in complex, high-impact situations.
• Track record of cross-functional influence.
