Engineering Manager

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager at Coinbase, you will lead engineering teams within the Product Foundations organization, building foundational backend services that power the core of the platform. You’ll translate product vision into a quarterly roadmap, drive architecture and engineering quality, and help recruit and grow exceptional engineers.

Responsibilities

• Build and manage engineering teams to deliver features, services, and infrastructure
• Coach direct reports and support their career growth
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to create and execute a quarterly roadmap
• Break down complex projects into smaller workstreams and lead iterative design and implementation
• Serve as a thoughtful technical voice, making architectural decisions and promoting high-quality code and engineering processes
• Ensure successful delivery and operation of multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale
• Work with recruiting/talent teams to identify and recruit exceptional engineers aligned with Coinbase culture
• Own and improve processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs
• Be hands-on when needed, including code/review, technical documents, on-call rotations, incident leadership, and bug triage

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience
• 2+ years of engineering management experience
• Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes
• Execution-focused mindset; ability to navigate ambiguity and deliver results
• Ability to balance long-term strategy with short-term planning
• Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenant distributed systems at scale
• Demonstrated ability to work hands-on (code/reviews, docs, on-call, incident response)
• Strong motivation to build an open financial system powered by crypto/blockchain
• Ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots in daily workflow (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean)

Work Setup

• Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only: in-person participation is required throughout the year, including multiple offsites annually.
