Role overview

Join Axios as an Engineering Manager to lead and mentor a team of engineers while staying close to the technical work. You’ll drive delivery and execution, improve codebase health and reliability, and help the team adopt agentic/AI-assisted development practices.

Key missions

Contribute directly to code and architecture, unblock the team, and resolve complex technical issues.
Direct high-quality delivery by making fast, pragmatic decisions and removing blockers.
Coach engineers with direct feedback, career guidance, and hands-on support.
Ensure code quality and reliability and build trust with product and design.
Drive operational excellence, focus, and prioritization for maximum team speed and ownership.

System design judgment and pragmatic architectural decisions
Adoption of AI fluency and agentic workflows

Requirements

3–7 years of experience leading engineering teams
Strong backend or full-stack web development background
System design judgment (balance speed, scalability, and maintainability)
Unblocking/product-instinct mindset: enable autonomy, make decisions visible, share context
Player-coach approach: lead through context while staying close to the work
Coaching that raises the bar and increases engineers’ responsibility
AI fluency: actively use AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows
Clear, decisive communication and strong engineering foundation (able to contribute to production code)
Experience leading coaching transitions (IC → tech lead, mid → senior)
Experience working in pod/squad models with end-to-end ownership
Track record taking ideas to delivery using PDLC and user testing
Familiarity with content platforms, API-driven architectures, or consumer-facing scalable systems

Nice-to-haves

Experience specifically with content platforms or large-scale consumer-facing systems
