Engineering Manager

Role Overview

Join Airbnb as an Engineering Manager for the Control Plane team within the Distributed Transactional Database organization. You’ll lead a team of software engineers building reliable, automated database operations, shaping the control-plane roadmap, and integrating open-source database capabilities into Airbnb’s infrastructure.

Key Missions

• Lead and grow a team of software engineers to deliver reliable, automated database operations.
• Define and execute a vision and 3-year roadmap for the control plane area with peers and partners.
• Attract top talent, mentor individual contributors, and manage promotions and career development.
• Collaborate cross-functionally across the company.
• Represent Airbnb in open-source communities and contribute to open-source integration efforts.

Requirements

• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across engineering and cross-team partners.
• Expertise with a public cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including relevant services such as:
  • Storage, VMs, networking
  • Kubernetes
  • Security offerings
• Experience building and operating distributed databases and long-term, evolvable services.
• Experience with organizational design for teams scaling up.
• 3+ years of engineering management experience and 6+ years of relevant software development experience in a fast-paced tech environment.

• Demonstrated involvement and leadership in open-source communities.
