Role overview

As an Engineering Leader at Benchling (full remote), you will lead the Data Input team, building a platform and user experiences that help scientists and lab operators efficiently capture and use their data. You will set technical and product-quality expectations while partnering closely with product and design to define the roadmap and long-term product strategy.

Key missions

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of software engineers, ensuring high standards of product quality.

  • Engage with customers to understand their needs and translate strategy into execution via quarterly plans with clear metrics and targets.

Responsibilities / expectations

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership: write and review code and treat engineering code reviews as essential.
  • Lead technically complex, long-running platform and infrastructure efforts (e.g., refactors, backend migrations, re-architecting core systems) with an emphasis on correctness, performance, and scalability.
  • Work cross-functionally with product, design, sales, and marketing.
  • Coach and grow engineers, taking early-to-mid career talent to leadership with company-wide impact.
  • Identify customer needs and incorporate them into roadmap planning.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager.
  • 5+ years as a software engineer, including technical lead experience across multiple engineers over multiple quarters.
  • Comfort with hands-on technical leadership (coding, reviewing) and experience leading complex refactors/migrations.
  • Experience building cloud-based web applications, with frontend and backend exposure.
  • Experience with cross-functional partners (product/design/sales/marketing).
  • Direct experience working with customers to inform roadmaps.

Nice to have

  • Strong Frontend experience with React and TypeScript.
  • Python experience.
  • Building customer-facing features plus developer platform / reusable component libraries.
  • Designing and delivering customer-facing APIs, particularly alongside a rich UI.
  • Experience with performance optimization, especially moving computation from client to server.
  • Experience in enterprise B2B SaaS in regulated industries.
  • Interest/capability to build AI-powered product features, including integrating LLMs into scientific workflows.
  • Familiarity with engineering management and productivity tools (e.g., Jira) and observability (logging, metrics, alerting).
  • Interest in biotech/life sciences (not required but a plus).

Location
