About the role

Role Overview

Engineering Director at Bad Robot Games, leading and supporting a high-caliber engineering team to develop and deliver a 4-player co-op game. You’ll own engineering leadership across org health, technical direction, delivery quality, and team culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the entire engineering organization (15+ people) including individual contributors, leads, and managers.
  • Assign engineers to cross-functional pods, align on key game areas, and help maintain a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, feedback, performance management, and career development.
  • Serve as the senior engineering voice in studio leadership discussions (strategic planning, resourcing, milestone reviews).
  • Raise the bar across engineering: enable teams to ship reliable, scalable systems and a polished player experience.
  • Proactively identify and address issues, risks, and opportunities; celebrate wins.
  • Partner with production, pod owners, and studio leadership to deliver sprints/milestones on time and at quality.
  • Allocate engineering resources across pods based on skills, knowledge, and project needs.
  • Ensure engineers have the tools, context, and cross-studio support required to execute effectively.
  • Advise leadership on engineering systems, technology, and infrastructure; mitigate technical risks.
  • Contribute hands-on as needed to gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints and C++).
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships and communicate regularly with pod leaders.
  • Build and scale the organization (recruiting + studio leadership), including headcount planning and long-term org health.
  • Support critical milestones with urgency, including playtests, studio/team events, and occasional travel.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of game development experience.
  • 8+ years in people management, with multiple shipped titles.
  • At least one senior engineering leadership role at the studio or project level.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow engineering teams while delivering results.
  • Experience managing managers.
  • Deep expertise in at least one core discipline (e.g., gameplay, systems, graphics) in Unreal Engine 4 or 5.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to delegate, manage competing priorities, and mitigate risk.
  • Solid understanding of end-to-end game development pipelines and how disciplines integrate.
  • Experience working with outsourced engineering partners.
