Embedded Software Engineer - UK

Role Overview

Embedded Software Engineer (UK) at E-Space. You will design, develop, and optimize low-level software for battery-operated IoT devices with a strong emphasis on testing automation, power efficiency, and real-time reliability.

Responsibilities

• Core embedded development: design, write, debug, and maintain low-level software, including BSPs and drivers
• Power optimization: implement algorithms to minimize power consumption for battery-operated devices
• RTOS/Linux kernel work: customize and optimize RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS) or Linux kernel components
• IoT integration: implement secure, efficient communication protocols (e.g., MQTT, BLE)
• Testing & automation:
  • build and maintain automated test frameworks (unit, integration, regression)
  • support debugging of faulty boards
  • test prototypes for early customer adoption
  • implement Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation for real-time software/hardware interactions
• CI for embedded testing: integrate automated testing pipelines with tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps
• Debugging & validation: use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers to debug embedded software and hardware interfaces
• Collaboration & documentation: work with hardware teams and maintain testing documentation, logs, and reports

Requirements

• Programming: proficiency in C, C++, and Python; scripting familiarity (e.g., Shell/Bash)
• Embedded systems: experience with microcontroller platforms and toolchains (e.g., ARM Cortex, ESP32, STM32)
• IoT protocols: knowledge of IoT communication protocols and secure data transmission
• Testing frameworks: experience with Robot Framework, Pytest, or Unity
• Power management: understanding of low-power design principles, energy-efficient algorithms, and power profiling
• Debugging tools: JTAG, GDB, and serial debuggers
• Automation/CI: experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools like Jenkins and GitLab CI
• Version control: strong Git knowledge

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Yocto
• Familiarity with wireless communication technologies (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee)
