About the role
Electrical Engineer — Substation Design
Senior, full-time role supporting power delivery projects for utility, municipal, and industrial clients.
Location
- Any location (with Florida and Illinois preferred)
Key Responsibilities
Substation Engineering & Design
- Lead design for new, expanded, and upgraded electrical substations (typically 69kV–500kV)
- Develop/review:
- Physical layouts, general arrangements
- Bus configurations and equipment arrangements
- Grounding systems and lightning protection
- Raceway and cable schedules
- Equipment foundations and civil/structural integration
- Perform/review electrical calculations:
- Ground grid analysis
- Short-circuit and relay coordination support
- AC/DC system design
- Produce construction deliverables (e.g., drawings, specifications, design reports, material lists)
Protection, Control & Systems Coordination
- Coordinate with protection/control, SCADA, and communications teams
- Support selection/integration of breaker, transformer, relay, and protection schemes
- Ensure compliance with utility standards and power system requirements
Project Leadership & Technical Oversight
- Serve as lead engineer/technical authority on substation projects
- Perform quality control reviews of drawings, calculations, and specifications
- Collaborate with civil, structural, geotechnical, transmission line, and environmental teams
- Support project management activities (scope development, cost estimating, scheduling, risk identification)
- Mentor junior engineers and designers
Client & Field Support
- Work directly with electric utilities, power providers, and industrial clients
- Support construction via:
- Contractor submittal reviews
- RFI responses
- Site visits and field observations
- Ensure design intent is implemented in the field
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering (or related field)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required at hire
- Minimum 8 years of substation/power delivery engineering experience
- Experience with transmission and distribution (T&D) utilities/power companies
- Strong understanding of substation equipment, protection philosophies, and utility standards
- Ability to lead technical tasks and coordinate multidisciplinary teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as EPC or owner engineer for utility projects
