Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Data Platform

Role Overview

Netflix is hiring a Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Data Platform to evolve and innovate its infrastructure. The role supports Netflix’s Data Platform teams, which build world-class data infrastructure for data discovery, governance, and large-scale online data stores.

Teams / Focus Areas

• Data Discovery & Governance: foundational building blocks for using data effectively, efficiently, securely, and in compliance with regulations.
• Netflix-wide Data Catalog: capture and infer business metadata across datasets.
• Distributed Search & Lineage: discover data and track lineage across systems.
• Policy Engine Framework: enable stakeholders to customize data policy rules for datasets.
• Online DataStores:
  • Key-Value Team: managed key-value store with secure, opinionated developer access; works with Cassandra and engages with the open-source community.
  • Caching: high-performance, reliable, cost-efficient storage solutions at extreme scale, including abstraction layers over base storage systems.

Responsibilities

• Help evolve and innovate Netflix’s distributed data infrastructure.
• Build and improve scalable, extensible systems for data discovery, lineage, governance, and online data storage.
• Contribute to high-performance and reliable data platforms used across multiple Netflix business lines.

Requirements

• Experience building distributed systems/infrastructure at scale (implied by the role and team focus).
• Ability to work on data platform components supporting security, privacy, compliance, and data quality (implied by Data Discovery & Governance scope).

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with key-value storage systems and/or Cassandra.
• Exposure to caching and performance/cost optimization in large-scale data stores.
• Familiarity with open-source contribution and stewardship (explicit for the KeyValue team).
