Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Data Platform

Role Overview

Netflix is hiring Distributed Systems Engineers (L5) for the Data Platform to help evolve and innovate infrastructure used for large-scale data processing, storage, and analytics.

Teams You May Work With

Big Data Compute (BDCS)

• Build the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing.
• Support Spark for ETL into an exabytes-scale data warehouse.
• Enable large-scale analytics for use cases like A/B testing, recommendations, and machine learning, plus initiatives such as ads and live.

Online Data Stores (Caching)

• Develop and maintain highly performant, reliable, and cost-efficient storage solutions at extreme scale.
• Build caching architectures targeting low latency, high throughput, and strong developer usability via secure abstraction layers.
• Power mission-critical Tier-0 services (e.g., streaming catalog and CDN metadata).

Analytics Infrastructure and Enablement

• Provide a platform to help data practitioners develop and manage data models and produce analytical products.
• Enable self-service analytics through robust APIs and tooling.

Responsibilities

• Solve challenging distributed systems and data-at-scale problems.
• Build features and deliver performance enhancements for data infrastructure.
• Collaborate with open source communities, shaping projects and contributing upstream.
• Work closely with stakeholders/business functions to support analytics and enable new initiatives.

Requirements

• Strong experience with distributed systems and large-scale data infrastructure.
• Experience with one or more of: Apache Spark, Presto/Trino, Apache Druid, Apache Iceberg.

Nice-to-Haves

• Demonstrated contribution and/or collaboration with open source projects.
• Experience building caching and/or online data storage systems for low-latency/high-throughput workloads.
