Director, Software Engineering - Order Management

Role Overview

Lead the Order Management engineering organization as a Director, Software Engineering. This is a people leader role responsible for setting technical and operational strategy across multiple product lines or a large department.

Responsibilities

• Modernize the Enterprise Order Management platform in partnership with architecture leadership, targeting:
  • High availability
  • Sub-second latency for inventory calls
  • Fault-tolerant order routing during peak retail traffic (e.g., Black Friday/Cyber Monday)
• Oversee Distributed Order Management (DOM) engineering:
  • Complex fulfillment logic
  • Split-shipment optimization
  • Pre-sourcing strategies
• Set and execute long-term technical vision/roadmap aligned to company strategy
• Drive engineering excellence and operational efficiency, championing Agile practices
• Lead and mentor engineering managers and senior technical leaders; foster accountability and continuous improvement
• Ensure end-to-end delivery of major software programs and product initiatives (quality, scalability, timeliness)
• Partner with executive leadership, product management, and business teams (Digital/eComm, Retail Stores, Supply Chain Logistics) to align engineering work to business goals
• Manage resource allocation, long-range capacity planning, and fiscal responsibility
• Champion cutting-edge technologies and modern architectural patterns
• Maintain high standards for software quality, system reliability, and security
• Manage strategic relationships with core enterprise vendors and integrators (e.g., Blue Yonder)

Requirements

• 12–15+ years of software engineering experience
• 5+ years in senior leadership roles
• Deep domain expertise in Omni-Channel fulfillment workflows, including:
  • BOPIS, SFS, curbside pickup
  • Reverse logistics/returns processing
• Strong understanding of real-time inventory segmentation and ATP (Available-to-Promise) logic
• Proven experience leading and scaling large distributed engineering organizations
• Solid grasp of cloud-native architectures and modern software development methodologies
• Experience with event-driven architectures and message brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ
• Strong communication, negotiation, and influencing skills across executive levels
• Experience managing budgets, resource planning, and vendor relationships
• Data-driven analytical and problem-solving skills
• Experience in talent management (recruiting, developing, retaining senior engineering leaders)
