Director of Software Engineering

Role Overview

PrePass is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams delivering mission-critical systems for its toll management, weigh station bypass, and safety platform. You will set the technical vision, drive organizational excellence, and ensure alignment between engineering execution and business strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership & technical vision
  • Define and execute the engineering vision and roadmap aligned with company objectives and market opportunities.
  • Partner with executive leadership on technology strategy, investment priorities, and long-term platform evolution.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and drive innovation initiatives.
  • Define engineering KPIs and metrics for delivery quality and operational excellence.
  • Lead offshore/nearshore remote teams, including hybrid teams of employees and contractors.
• Organizational leadership & talent development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop multiple engineering managers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Scale teams via hiring, retention, and succession planning.
  • Create career development frameworks to attract and retain engineering talent.
• Technical excellence & architecture
  • Provide architectural oversight and technical governance to ensure scalability, security, and reliability.
  • Drive modern practices including cloud-native, microservices, and DevOps.
  • Establish and enforce coding standards, design principles, and security policies.
  • Manage technical debt and lead platform modernization.
  • Oversee high-traffic, high-transaction architectures.
• Delivery & operational excellence
  • Own delivery across multiple product lines, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality.
  • Manage engineering budgets, resourcing, and vendor relationships.
  • Drive operational excellence with monitoring, incident management, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise security, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
• Cross-functional collaboration
  • Represent engineering in executive discussions, board presentations, and strategic planning.
  • Partner with Product, Operations, and Business Development to align priorities with customer and market needs.

Requirements

• Strategic leadership experience across multiple engineering teams delivering mission-critical platform capabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to define technical direction and establish engineering governance (KPIs/metrics, standards, security policies).
• Experience scaling and developing engineering organizations (mentoring managers, hiring/retention, succession planning).
• Strong architecture and modernization leadership for cloud-native and microservices systems.
• Experience running delivery and operational excellence processes (monitoring, incident management, continuous improvement).
• Proven ability to lead remote/offshore/nearshore and hybrid teams.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with high-traffic, high-transaction systems and platform modernization/technical debt programs.
• Familiarity with transportation/industry regulatory and security compliance requirements.
