Director of Quality Engineering

Role Overview

Director of Quality Engineering at Code Metal. This role is the first dedicated quality engineering leadership position at the company. You will define what “quality” means, build the QE organization and tooling from the ground up, and partner with engineering, product, and customer success to embed verification into how the team ships.

Responsibilities

• Define and own Code Metal’s quality engineering strategy across functional, integration, performance, load, and reliability testing.
• Build and lead the Quality Engineering team (hire, mentor, and grow QE/SDET and test infrastructure engineers).
• Stand up a test automation platform, including:
  • CI/CD test orchestration
  • Ephemeral test environments
  • End-to-end regression suites
  • Performance benchmarks
  • Chaos/fault-injection tooling
• Drive shift-left quality practices:
  • Code coverage gates
  • Static analysis
  • Contract tests
  • Design-for-testability reviews
  • Developer-friendly tooling
• Own release-readiness criteria and ensure builds meet the bar to ship.
• Establish engineering quality metrics covering test effectiveness, release readiness, automation coverage, test reliability, performance stability, and customer-reported defect trends.
• Partner with infrastructure/platform teams on production observability so quality signals flow past deployment.
• Implement quality processes supporting ISO 27001 (test evidence, release controls, change management, documentation, and audit readiness).

Requirements

• 10+ years in software quality engineering, SDET, or test infrastructure roles, including 4+ years leading teams.
• Proven experience building or maturing a Quality Engineering organization.
• Strong technical ability to design test architectures, understand the code under test, and write production-quality automation.
• Experience testing complex systems (e.g., developer tools, compilers/language runtimes, infrastructure platforms, distributed systems, or code generation platforms).
• Hands-on experience with modern CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Buildkite, CircleCI or similar), containerized test environments, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Excellent judgment on when to automate vs. use exploratory/manual testing.
• Strong written and verbal communication; effective cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product, and executives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with compiler technology, language tooling, code generation, static analysis, or developer platforms.
• Property-based testing, contract testing, or fault-injection testing.
• Experience implementing processes for ISO 27001, SOC 2, or similar frameworks.
• Experience supporting customers in regulated industries (defense, fintech, healthcare).
