About the role
Role Overview
The Director of Operations will partner with firm leadership to improve operational efficiency, standardize processes, support firmwide initiatives, and ensure teams have the systems and resources needed to deliver high-quality client service. This is a remote leadership role with periodic travel across the U.S.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day operational functions across offices, departments, and remote teams.
- Develop and execute operational strategies supporting growth, profitability, and client service.
- Evaluate and implement standardized, scalable workflows.
- Manage and improve workflow processes for tax, audit, accounting, and administration.
- Monitor project timelines and staffing metrics (e.g., capacity, utilization, realization, engagement progress).
- Identify operational challenges/inefficiencies and recommend practical solutions.
- Support implementation and optimization of practice-management, workflow, timekeeping, billing, document-management, and client-service systems.
- Build operational reports, dashboards, and KPIs for firm leadership.
- Coordinate with partners and teams including HR, Finance, IT, and Administration.
- Support staffing plans, scheduling, resource allocation, onboarding, and employee development.
- Manage vendor relationships, contracts, facilities-related matters, and third-party service providers.
- Establish and maintain firmwide policies, procedures, controls, and documentation.
- Support change-management and communicate new processes across the firm.
- Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, acquisitions, and office integrations.
- Travel periodically to offices and other U.S. locations as needed.
Requirements
- Significant experience in operations/administration/practice management within a CPA or public accounting firm.
- Strong understanding of public accounting workflows (tax, audit, client accounting, billing, scheduling, engagement management).
- Experience leading operational improvements across multiple teams, departments, or locations.
- Proven ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, systems, and scalable processes.
- Strong project management, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with accounting-firm technology and practice-management/workflow systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across partners, professionals, staff, and vendors.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong discretion with confidential employee, client, and firm information.
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically across the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as Director of Operations, Firm Administrator, or Chief Operating Officer.
