Director of Engineering

Role Overview

You’ll serve as Director of Engineering in a hands-on, player-coach capacity, leading a small but established team (~20 engineers) spanning backend, frontend, and QA. The goal is to modernize development practices, sharpen execution, and accelerate shipped product while owning key technical decisions and day-to-day delivery.

Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Execution

• Lead and mentor engineers across backend, frontend, and QA
• Own technical architecture and make key system design/technology choices
• Identify and remove delivery bottlenecks; implement improvements quickly
• Establish delivery metrics, sprint cadences, and accountability frameworks
• Build and scale processes/tools/practices for faster, more reliable releases

Product & Roadmap Management

• Partner with leadership to translate business objectives into technical roadmaps
• Own and prioritize the engineering roadmap (new features, technical debt, and infrastructure)
• Coordinate across backend/frontend/QA for aligned, efficient delivery
• Drive sprint rituals (planning, stand-ups, retrospectives)

AI Execution

• Define and maintain an AI-driven development playbook, evolving it as capabilities mature
• Evaluate, pilot, and deploy AI tooling into production
• Identify high-value product areas to embed AI into user and operational workflows
• Deep prior AI experience not required; you’ll grow into AI leadership with access to internal expertise

Requirements

• 6+ years software engineering experience
• 3+ years engineering leadership experience
• Proven ability to improve development velocity
• Experience managing and scaling engineering teams
• Strong hands-on background with modern web application architectures
• Java/Spring Boot backend experience
• Modern frontend experience: Angular, React, or Vue
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
• Excellent communication skills with non-technical stakeholders
• Comfortable in fast-paced, iterative environments
• Experience implementing engineering metrics/KPIs
• Willingness to learn and apply AI in production
