Director of Engineering

Role overview

Lead Discord’s commerce platform and on-platform player experience teams as Director of Engineering. You will report to the VP of Engineering and help shape and execute Discord’s commerce strategy.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage multiple engineering teams focused on:
  • Commerce platform development
  • In-Discord player experience
• Define and drive the commerce platform strategy from the ground up, organizing existing teams and building new capabilities.
• Partner with major publishers and game developers to drive adoption, understand the full customer lifecycle, and build tooling that creates value.
• Collaborate with product leadership and continuously improve the engineering organization.
• Hire, coach, and grow leaders and engineers, instilling ownership and technical direction.

Requirements

• 2+ years managing other managers.
• 5+ years as an Engineering Manager, including managing groups of:
  • 3+ Engineering Managers
  • 15+ software engineers
• Strong technical foundation; able to stay hands-on for architecture discussions and to lead technical conversations with partners.
• Experience hiring and growing senior leaders and managers.
• Ability to derive pragmatic solutions using first-principles thinking.
• Understanding of developer mindsets; experience building products/platforms for developer audiences.
• 5+ years as a Software Engineer with a strong technical foundation.

Nice-to-haves / domain signals

• Gaming industry experience (AAA publishers, platform providers, or studios).
• Experience building commerce platforms, microtransaction systems, or web shops at scale.
• Background in building revenue-generating infrastructure for high-volume transactions.
• SDK design or platform API experience.
• Experience defining and building new teams and strategies from scratch.
