Role overview

Join Owner as Director of Data Platform Engineering, a hands-on engineering leadership role responsible for the end-to-end data platform architecture. You will move data out of production systems and make it available to analysts and product features, while leading and developing a team.

Key missions

Own the end-to-end data platform architecture, including migration of data from production systems to a reliable data warehouse.
Design and implement rigorous data modeling processes, ensuring a single semantic layer for key metrics.
Lead and develop engineers by setting quality and performance standards for data pipelines.

Responsibilities

Work closely with engineering leadership and the VP of Business Operations, partnering with multiple teams across the company.
Ensure data reliability and operational excellence through SLAs/SLOs, quality monitoring, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
Treat data pipelines as production software (version control, code review, automated tests, schema/data contracts, and CI/CD).
Provide governance across lineage, cataloging, and access control, including PII and payments data.

Requirements

10+ years in data engineering, data platform, or analytics engineering, including 3–5 years leading and building teams others depend on.
Strong data modeling and SQL, plus production-quality Python.
Proven ownership of data reliability via SLAs/SLOs, monitoring, incident response, and root-cause work.
Deep hands-on experience with a modern data stack:
- Cloud warehouse/lakehouse: Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, or Redshift
- Transformation: dbt or similar
- Orchestration: Airflow, Dagster, or similar
- Batch and streaming: Kafka, Spark, Flink, or equivalents
Strong engineering practices: version control, code review, automated tests, schema/data contracts, CI/CD.
Governance experience: lineage, cataloging, access control (including PII and payments), plus good judgment about appropriate use of AI/ML.

Nice-to-haves

Practical experience with AI/ML governance and risk assessment (judging where AI adds value vs. introduces risk).
