Director, Engineering (Remote Eligible)

Role Overview

As Director of Engineering for Views at Smartsheet, you will lead engineering teams building the Timeline View, Board View, and Shared Experiences—the highest-usage UX area for how millions of users interact with Smartsheet’s Grid Platform.

You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering (Bellevue, WA) or work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.

Responsibilities

• Own the engineering vision, charter, and goals for the Views pillar and partner with product to drive the roadmap and quarterly priorities.
• Lead multiple engineering teams (through Engineering Managers and Principal Engineers), ensuring delivery, technical quality, and team health.
• Drive architecture for scalable, high-traffic, high-availability front-end experiences.
• Set and maintain a high quality bar across the pillar, including:
  • Code quality
  • Automated test coverage
  • Performance
  • Security
  • Operational excellence
• Define engineering and business outcome metrics (availability, production reliability, customer satisfaction signals).
• Lead cross-team technical initiatives: resolve architectural conflicts, reduce duplication, and make decisions to prepare for future needs.
• Communicate proactively with engineering teams, executive leadership, and customers—translating technical complexity into business context.
• Drive AI adoption across the pillar, holding leaders accountable and championing AI-first design and operational practices.
• Lead strategic hiring planning, model a high bar for talent, and build an inclusive culture.
• Promote continuous improvement: build learning organizations and mentor engineering leaders.

Requirements

• 11+ years software engineering and system architecture experience across languages/frameworks/paradigms.
• 5+ years engineering leadership, including 3+ years managing organizations of 20+ people, with direct experience leading managers.
• Proven experience building/scaling high-traffic, high-availability enterprise SaaS.
• Deep front-end expertise with React, Redux, and Webpack (or comparable libraries).
• 4+ years experience with microservices or SOA-based web applications and designing distributed systems.
• Experience with AWS infrastructure tooling (e.g., Terraform, EC2, ALB, Route 53).
• Experience designing database architectures across globally replicated cloud environments using NoSQL/relational patterns.

• Strong track record of embedding security into application development and operations.
• Demonstrated ability to lead AI-first product and engineering practices.
