About the role

Role overview

REI is seeking a Principal Digital Product Designer to shape high-impact digital experiences across REI’s platforms. You’ll act as both a lead designer and a cross-functional partner, partnering with product, engineering, research, and brand to deliver thoughtful, human-centered work aligned with REI’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Frame ambiguous problems and drive solutions for one or more critical digital products or strategic projects.
  • Create design artifacts such as:
    • implementation prototypes, mockups
    • task analysis, usability studies
    • personas, user flows
    • wireframes, style guides, navigational structures
    • affinity diagrams
  • Define and scale design standards: build out design system standards, patterns, style guides, and frameworks.
  • Collaborate to ship and improve new design standards and practices with product, marketing, and engineering.
  • Facilitate cross-functional execution with product managers, engineers, analytics, and research to ensure customer needs are met.
  • Support planning through task/dependency analysis, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
  • Lead UX research using both generative and evaluative methods.
  • Mentor and coach designers and help grow design capability (without full organizational leadership responsibilities).
  • Elevate design quality and evangelize design best practices; guide teams through ambiguity.

Required skills & experience

  • 10+ years experience in UX / interaction design / information architecture / service design or similar.
  • 3+ years leading projects and/or mentoring teams.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing and communicating design strategy across stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to design with technical constraints in mind.
  • Track record of end-to-end delivery of features/products across multiple platforms at a departmental level.
  • Experience developing design standards, patterns, style guides, and frameworks using human-centered methodologies.
  • Ability to present work to executives clearly and concisely.
