About the role
Role overview
REI is seeking a Principal Digital Product Designer to shape high-impact digital experiences across REI’s platforms. You’ll act as both a lead designer and a cross-functional partner, partnering with product, engineering, research, and brand to deliver thoughtful, human-centered work aligned with REI’s mission.
Responsibilities
- Frame ambiguous problems and drive solutions for one or more critical digital products or strategic projects.
- Create design artifacts such as:
- implementation prototypes, mockups
- task analysis, usability studies
- personas, user flows
- wireframes, style guides, navigational structures
- affinity diagrams
- Define and scale design standards: build out design system standards, patterns, style guides, and frameworks.
- Collaborate to ship and improve new design standards and practices with product, marketing, and engineering.
- Facilitate cross-functional execution with product managers, engineers, analytics, and research to ensure customer needs are met.
- Support planning through task/dependency analysis, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
- Lead UX research using both generative and evaluative methods.
- Mentor and coach designers and help grow design capability (without full organizational leadership responsibilities).
- Elevate design quality and evangelize design best practices; guide teams through ambiguity.
Required skills & experience
- 10+ years experience in UX / interaction design / information architecture / service design or similar.
- 3+ years leading projects and/or mentoring teams.
- Demonstrated experience influencing and communicating design strategy across stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to design with technical constraints in mind.
- Track record of end-to-end delivery of features/products across multiple platforms at a departmental level.
- Experience developing design standards, patterns, style guides, and frameworks using human-centered methodologies.
- Ability to present work to executives clearly and concisely.
