Design Engineer

Role Overview

Design Engineer (Mobile-focused) at Function Health. You’ll prototype high-fidelity mobile interfaces, translate designs into production-ready code, and improve the design-to-engineering workflow. As an early team member, you’ll help shape the member experience as the product scales from hundreds of thousands to millions.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate & prototype: Partner with designers, engineers, and product managers to rapidly prototype interfaces, animations, and features aligned to product strategy and design principles (using example data for near-real experiences).
• Translate designs into code: Implement and validate UI components, interactions, and transitions so designs are consistent across platforms.
• Improve design-to-engineering handoff: Support and evolve the design system by producing reusable components and writing documentation to reduce friction.
• Innovate & experiment: Prototype using React Native and AI/other experimentation environments to explore future-facing functionality.
• Technical problem solving: Act as a technical consultant for complex UX challenges while maintaining design integrity without sacrificing performance/usability.
• Scale design standards: Build scalable, accessible, and maintainable components and interactions for a cohesive, high-quality experience.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field.
• Experience: 5–6+ years mobile-first experience as a Design Engineer or Mobile Developer in a commercial digital product/tech environment.
• Experience developing and scaling design systems/component libraries and enabling teams to implement them.
• React Native proficiency (advanced, required).
• Front-end/tools experience: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, plus at least one of Compose or SwiftUI; Storybook experience.
• Prototyping/design systems: Experience with prototyping tools such as ProtoPie, Origami, Figma, or Framer.
• Strong design sensibility, detail orientation, and ability to communicate effectively.

• Motion/animation and UI tooling: Motion.dev, Reanimated
• Styling/UI: Tailwind
• Framework exposure: React or Vue.js
