Design Engineer (f/m/x)

Role overview

As a Design Engineer at alago, you define how the product looks, feels, and behaves—then ship it yourself in the frontend. You’ll be the company’s first design engineering hire and work closely with the founders to build the product end-to-end.

What you’ll do

• Understand user requirements and draft PRDs.
• Prototype new features in Figma / Claude Design or directly in code, and contribute to specs so the team can ship quickly.
• Ship production UI by working directly in the frontend with:
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind
  • shadcn
• Build and evolve a design system:
  • Create components in Figma
  • Implement tokens and corresponding real components in code
• Learn from users by watching what confuses construction teams and iterating to fix it.

Requirements (must-haves)

• C1 German (you’ll communicate directly with German construction project managers).
• Strong UX/UI proficiency (components, prototyping, systems thinking).
• Frontend fundamentals with real experience in React, TypeScript, Tailwind (or close equivalents), including:
  • component architecture
  • state management
  • responsive layout
  • performance instincts
• A portfolio showing complex software UI that you both designed and built (not just landing pages).
• Strong attention to detail (alignment, type, motion curves, and avoiding layout shift).

Bonus / nice-to-haves

• Experience with Figma MCP, Cursor, or Lovable.
• Background in B2B SaaS or complex enterprise tools.
• Experience building a design system from zero.

Hiring process

• 20-minute intro call
• 30-minute call with Vinzenz (technical co-founder)
• Onsite case study in Munich with prep (2–3 hours).
• Offer decided within 24 hours after the case study and typically sent out within 48 hours.

Location & schedule

• Hybrid: 3 days/week in central Munich office (WERK1).
