About the role

Role Overview

LiveKit is hiring a Design Engineer, Design Systems to lead and evolve the company’s design system within the Design org, partnering closely with Product Engineering. You will own the UI primitives that help ensure a cohesive, high-quality product experience that scales across multiple product surfaces.

What You’ll Own & Drive

Lead and evolve the design system
- Own the roadmap for components, tokens, foundations, and interaction patterns
- Define and maintain standards for component quality, accessibility, and usability
- Establish governance and contribution models so teams can scale safely
Build primitives for scale and quality
- Architect and implement robust, accessible, production-grade UI components
- Maintain design tokens, theming infrastructure, and shared foundations
- Ensure components are performant, composable, and easy to adopt
Improve adoption through documentation & tooling
- Invest in documentation, examples, and tooling to drive system uptake
Raise the UI bar across product
- Collaborate with designers and engineers to improve visual polish, interaction quality, and cross-product consistency
- Advocate for best practices in layout, motion, accessibility, and interaction design
Prototype and explore advanced interactions
- Build high-fidelity prototypes to validate UX decisions and influence product direction
- Push on motion and micro-interactions where they enhance clarity and usability
Make the system AI-native
- Explore how AI tools/LLMs/models can consume the design system
- Help make tokens/components/patterns machine-readable for model-friendly generation

Requirements

7+ years of front-end engineering or design engineering
Strong UI engineering craft with deep care for layout, motion, interaction design, and usability
Expertise in TypeScript, React, Tailwind, component-driven architectures, and accessibility best practices
Experience building or maintaining design systems (components, tokens, docs, governance, tooling)
Portfolio demonstrating UI engineering craft, component thinking, and prototyping ability
Systems mindset: thinking in primitives, abstractions, and reusable patterns
Strong communication and cross-functional influence

Nice-to-Haves

AI-native experience
- Experimented with LLMs generating UI or consuming design systems
- Built tooling to let AI compose interfaces from structured components
- Considered design systems as inputs to generative/agentic workflows
