Design Director, Core Experience

Role overview

The Core Experience Design team at Block shapes the future of Cash App by defining the fundamental flows, frameworks, and surfaces relied on by tens of millions of customers. As Design Director, Core Experience, you will be a hybrid player-coach and DRI for strategic design step-changes.

Responsibilities

• Define and uphold craft excellence for Core Experience: stay close to details, lead critique, and ensure the highest quality bar for every shipped experience.
• Set long-term vision and roadmaps in partnership with senior product and engineering leadership.
• Lead and grow a team of 10+ designers: mentor across career stages and disciplines, foster accountability, and develop talent.
• Stay hands-on with the most complex and ambiguous design challenges while enabling your team to deliver independently.
• Partner cross-functionally with senior peers across product, engineering, and research; champion Design as a driver of business strategy.
• Adopt emerging tools and AI-driven approaches to accelerate craft and delivery velocity.

Requirements

• 12+ years of product design experience with a portfolio demonstrating exceptional craft, taste, and the ability to simplify complex systems.
• Proven experience leading design teams, including player-coach responsibilities (own strategy while delivering critical projects).
• Demonstrated ability to craft long-term vision and customer-focused strategies for products at scale.
• Deep expertise designing consumer financial products or similarly complex, trust-dependent systems.
• Strong partnership and communication skills to align senior leadership across design, product, engineering, and research.
• Experience attracting, developing, and retaining strong design talent.
