Role Overview

As a Data Visualization Engineer (remote), you will design and deliver interactive, insight-driven visualizations that turn complex data into clear, trustworthy, and actionable dashboards and reports for stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop interactive dashboards, reports, and data visualizations for key metrics, trends, and insights
• Partner with stakeholders (business, analysts, data teams) to gather requirements and translate KPIs and business questions into compelling visual narratives
• Select appropriate visualization approaches based on data type and audience needs
• Connect visualization tools to enterprise data sources (cloud platforms, relational databases, APIs, flat files)
• Build and optimize data models, semantic layers, and calculated metrics for accurate and performant visuals
• Apply visualization best practices for layout, color, typography, accessibility (WCAG), interactivity, and information hierarchy
• Establish and maintain visualization standards, templates, style guides, and component libraries
• Improve dashboard performance via query tuning, caching, incremental loading, and efficient modeling
• Collaborate with data platform engineers to surface data quality issues and ensure reliable, well-documented data assets
• Support self-service analytics adoption with documentation, training materials, and reusable report templates
• Conduct peer reviews and provide technical guidance within the BI environment

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in data visualization, business intelligence engineering, or a related field
• Expert proficiency in one or more tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or Qlik Sense
• Strong SQL skills to write, optimize, and troubleshoot queries on large relational and cloud datasets
• Solid understanding of data modeling (star/snowflake schemas, relationships, aggregations, calculated fields for BI semantic layers)
• Experience connecting to modern platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Azure Synapse, or Amazon Redshift
• Strong data visualization and UX principles, including WCAG accessibility, color theory, hierarchy, and responsive design
• Ability to gather and translate business requirements into production-ready dashboards and reports
• Proven ability to work independently, manage deliverables, and communicate proactively in a contract/consulting capacity

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in more than one visualization platform
• Familiarity with Python or R for data preparation/analysis integrated with visualization environments
• Knowledge of data governance, data cataloging, and metadata management
• Experience delivering within a Center of Excellence (COE) or enterprise BI governance framework
• Familiarity with Git and CI/CD practices for BI development/deployment
