About the role

Role overview

Mathematica is looking for a Data Scientist to derive meaning from data and create/deploy data-driven approaches to solve client and policy problems. You will own parts of the data processing and analysis work and collaborate with more senior data science staff to implement advanced methods (including generative AI and machine learning) for research reports, internal tooling, and client systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own data processing and analysis tasks and support senior staff on larger data science efforts
  • Work across the full project lifecycle:
    • Understand client needs
    • Build data pipelines
    • Monitor data quality
    • Develop documentation
    • Create visualizations
    • Brainstorm modeling approaches
    • Implement predictive/analytic models
  • Use data science to support Mathematica’s core offerings in program improvement, policy assessment, and evidence generation

Example projects

  • Build and evaluate generative AI tools to extract clinically important information from unstructured clinical notes, then use it for predictive modeling and descriptive statistics
  • Evaluate and monitor impacts of alternative payment models (care quality, cost, outcomes) using large-scale claims data
  • Predict future hospital costs and behavior using the same data
  • Conduct geospatial analyses of geographic access to food retailers and build interactive dashboards for policymakers
  • Simulate realistic diets using survey and purchase data; analyze dietary nutrition value vs. guidelines
  • Build NLP/GenAI knowledge synthesis solutions (e.g., knowledge graphs, MCP, retrieval-augmented generation) to extract quantitative results and contextual details from large literatures
