About the role
Role Overview
Data Scientist (Remote) supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The role applies advanced statistical analysis, data mining, and AI to transform raw data into actionable insights, with a strong emphasis on predictive/descriptive analytics and simulation modeling.
Responsibilities
- Apply statistical analysis, data mining, and AI with minimal supervision.
- Consult on data mining and analysis across multiple data sources.
- Design and implement data-driven solutions, including:
- Advanced analytical methods
- Data models
- Visualizations
- Build quantitative simulations and models for descriptive and predictive analytics.
- Identify trends and problems through complex big data analysis.
- Stay current on emerging machine learning, statistical modeling, and analytics tools/techniques.
Requirements
- 6 years of relevant experience in applied research, big data analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, operations research, or closely related quantitative disciplines.
- 3+ years of direct experience in machine learning.
- Master’s or PhD in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
- PhD may substitute for up to 3 years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of data mining methods, databases, data visualization, and machine learning.
- Ability to communicate analysis techniques, concepts, and outputs.
- Clearance required: TS or CBP BI or DHS suitability clearance adjudicated within the past 4 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Qlik for embedding visualizations into webpages.
- Familiarity with Databricks (or similar cloud-based distributed database tech).
- Comfortable with PySpark and Python.
- Ability to write complex SQL (ETL-style extraction/transformation/loading).
- Expertise in:
- Anomaly detection
- Clustering
- Time-series (e.g., ARIMA)
- NLP experience including:
- preprocessing (e.g., stemming)
- TF-IDF
- Named Entity Recognition
- LLMs
Location / Work Setup
- Remote, with preference for candidates located in the National Capital Region (DMV).
