Data Scientist

Role overview

Karoo Health is hiring a Data Scientist for a fully remote, U.S.-based full-time technical role. You will bridge complex healthcare data with actionable clinical and business insights, building the “brain” of the Karoo platform with Data Engineering, Product, and Clinical teams.

Responsibilities

• Predictive modeling & risk stratification: Develop and deploy ML models to identify high-risk, high-cost members before acute events (e.g., ER visits, inpatient stays).
• Clinical intelligence: Research claims and EHR data to find opportunities for new clinical interventions that reduce adverse events.
• Value-based care analytics: Analyze total cost of care (TCoC), utilization, and patient attribution to track performance against baseline contracts.
• Data quality & validation: Apply rigorous validation to ensure accuracy, fairness, and consistency with noisy clinical/claims data.
• Cross-collaboration: Partner with Engineering and Analytics to surface modeling insights in applications and BI reports.
• Data safeguarding: Ensure compliance with healthcare data regulations such as HIPAA and HITRUST, and follow data security best practices.

Requirements

• Education: BS or MS in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience: 5+ years in an advanced analytics or Data Science role.
• Healthcare domain: Experience with payer claims and related healthcare data formats (e.g., FHIR, HL7).
• Technical skills: Expert Python/R and SQL.
• ML experience: Proven track record building and deploying production-grade ML models (e.g., regression, classification, clustering, neural networks).
• Regulatory knowledge: Familiarity with HIPAA and HITRUST.
• Communication: Ability to explain complex model outputs to executive and clinical stakeholders.
• Work authorization: Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future employer sponsorship.

• Experience directly tied to value-based care performance measurement and/or contract analytics.
