Data Scientist II

Role overview

Toast’s Toast AI Engineering team is hiring a Data Scientist II to embed data science capabilities into the Toast platform. You’ll partner with engineers and product managers to develop statistical and machine learning models that power key product lines.

Responsibilities

• Apply data mining, statistical analysis, and machine learning to produce impactful, objective, and actionable insights.
• Collaborate cross-functionally (e.g., sales, marketing, product) to identify business opportunities and build data-driven solutions for growth and engagement.
• Work with line-of-business teams and partners (product managers, engineers, data scientists) to enable data-driven decisions with measurable impact.
• Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to high-level partners using verbal, visual, and written formats.
• Thrive in a fast-moving, rapidly evolving environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (CS, engineering, math, statistics, economics); Master’s preferred.
• 2+ years of data science experience in an industry environment.
• Strong foundations in statistics and machine learning.
• Familiar with ML concepts such as regression/classification, clustering, and offline/online model evaluation.
• Experience with advanced ML including supervised/unsupervised learning, graph algorithms, deep learning (e.g., NLP), recommendation systems, and generative AI.
• Proficiency with Python and SQL, plus ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
• Cloud experience, preferably AWS (e.g., SageMaker, DynamoDB, Athena, Glue).
• Experience with model workflow orchestration, e.g., Airflow.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice to haves

• Experience with LLM applications (e.g., prompting, RAG, evaluation).
• Knowledge of software engineering best practices (OOP, test-driven development, CI/CD, Git, shell scripting, task orchestration).
• Experience deploying machine learning systems in production.
• Experience with A/B testing and experimentation methodologies.
