Data Scientist

Role overview

The Data Scientist advances the CDC Foundation’s mission by using data, analytics, machine learning, and visualization to support public health decisions and tribal needs. You will work within the Informatics and Analytics Department and the Great Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (GPTEC), helping ingest, clean, analyze, and distribute data to support surveillance, investigations, reporting, and epidemiological analysis.

Responsibilities

Data engineering & analytics

• Partner with a Data Engineer to expand and optimize data and data pipelines.
• Convert unstructured data into structured, analyzable formats for GPTEC and tribal epidemiologists.
• Collect/extract data from multiple sources, transform and clean it for accuracy and consistency.
• Load data into storage systems/data warehouses.
• Optimize pipelines, infrastructure, and workflows for performance and scalability.
• Integrate data flows into the informatics system and support automation of data movement.

Visualization & communication

• Collaborate with the GPTEC Data Coordinating Unit and epidemiologists to plan dashboard content.
• Work with GPTEC staff and tribal public health departments to gather visualization requirements.
• Build tribal-specific, real-time dashboards using available data sources.
• Update/rework existing dashboards to connect to automated data pipelines when applicable.
• Ensure dashboards are interpretable by a general audience (digital and printed).
• Create visualizations and reports that communicate findings to partners and decision-makers.

Organization-wide tooling

• Develop, implement, and improve data analysis and visualization tools for internal users to provide timely, relevant insights for public health decision-making.
