Data Engineering Manager

Role overview

SmarterDx is hiring a Data Engineering Manager (full remote, Madrid) to lead and grow a data engineering team responsible for ingesting, harmonizing, and operationalizing healthcare data. You’ll scale new-client onboarding, raise the bar on data quality and governance, and ensure resilient, observable, and cost-effective ELT pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a high-performing data engineering team (set objectives, mentor engineers, support hiring and performance)
• Scale new-client onboarding using automation, standardization, and repeatable integration patterns
• Improve data quality and governance across healthcare datasets
• Ensure ELT pipelines are resilient, observable, and cost-effective
• Drive operational excellence, including:
  • SLOs/SLAs
  • on-call/incident management
  • root-cause analysis and preventive improvements
• Collaborate closely with Product, Clinical, Data Science, and Engineering to deliver durable outcomes
• Own operational metrics and reporting for data engineering execution

Requirements

• 7+ years of data engineering experience, including leadership (hiring, mentoring, performance, and delivery outcomes)
• Strong SQL and data modeling expertise
• Proven ELT experience with dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, and Python
• Strong healthcare data expertise, including clinical and/or billing/claims datasets
• Hands-on interoperability experience and normalization patterns:
  • HL7, FHIR, CCD/C-CDA
  • EHR extract patterns
• Operational excellence mindset with incident management and preventive improvements
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management across Product and Clinical partners

Nice-to-haves (from certifications/profile)

• Certifications such as Snowflake (SnowPro), AWS (Data Analytics or Solutions Architect), dbt, or healthcare data certifications (CHDA/RHIA)
• Experience scaling in a scale-up / rapid-growth technology company
• Comfort contributing hands-on when needed to unblock the team
