Data Engineering Manager (ETL / Data Warehouse)

Location: Remote (U.S.-based; EST hours preferred)
Engagement: Contract-to-hire
Compensation: $55/hr (W2) or $80/hr (1099/C2C); max later-offered salary up to $130k (visa/sponsorship not accepted)

Role Overview

Hands-on, technical Data Engineering Manager to lead a growing team responsible for enterprise ETL, data warehousing, and production support. This is a 50/50 Management / Hands-On Technical role—ideal for someone transitioning into a lead/managing position while staying deeply involved in the engineering work.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, mentor, and support data engineers across U.S. and offshore teams
• Build a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture
• Provide technical guidance and hands-on support when needed
• Establish best practices, development standards, and operational excellence

ETL & Data Engineering Delivery

• Oversee ETL and data warehouse delivery from planning through release
• Manage priorities, timelines, resourcing, and stakeholder communication
• Ensure reliability and performance of production ETL pipelines and workflows
• Perform root-cause analysis for production issues and data quality concerns
• Improve monitoring, alerting, KPI tracking, and operational reporting

Process Improvement & Innovation

• Identify and automate manual processes to improve efficiency
• Recommend and implement improvements to tooling, frameworks, and engineering practices
• Collaborate with leadership and business stakeholders to align solutions to objectives
• Bring new ideas and challenge approaches constructively

Requirements

• 7+ years in data engineering ETL development and data warehousing
• 5+ years leadership or team management experience
• Strong technical leadership and ability to mentor engineers and guide projects
• Experience managing distributed and/or offshore teams
• Strong project management and stakeholder communication skills
• Hands-on experience with: Snowflake, dbt, SSIS, SQL Server, and advanced SQL
• ETL pipeline development and data movement processes
• Data warehousing concepts and architecture

Nice to Have

• Azure (or other cloud data platforms)
• CI/CD and DevOps practices for data pipelines
• Data governance and data quality initiatives
