Data Engineering Leader

Role overview

As Manager of Data Engineering in Cognite’s European Delivery organization, you will lead, develop, and retain a team of Data Engineers supporting complex industrial AI engagements. This is a people leadership + hands-on delivery role with a meaningful billable commitment.

Key responsibilities

People development & performance

• Own the professional development of Data Engineers (from junior to seasoned), running structured 1:1s, calibrated performance reviews, and growth conversations using the Data Engineering framework.
• Provide technical, specific coaching (not generic management feedback) to raise engineering quality.
• Identify and address skill gaps proactively before they impact delivery.
• Build a culture of ownership, technical rigor, and AI-first delivery.

Delivery accountability

• Maintain approximately 50% billable capacity by working on customer projects alongside your team.
• Review Statements of Work (SOWs) for scope fit, identify skill gaps, and flag delivery risks early.
• Advocate for the team in staffing decisions by matching engineers to engagements where they can deliver and grow.
• Act as an escalation point when delivery gets hard.

Leadership collaboration

• Participate in the Value Delivery (VD) Europe profession leadership team.
• Partner with Portfolio Managers and cross-functional leaders across Value Delivery.

Requirements / expectations

• This is not pure people management; you must be a practitioner who understands the work at depth to coach, assess, and raise technical standards.
