Data Engineer

Role Overview

As a Senior Data Engineer at Wheelhouse, you will own the reliability, speed, and scale of the company’s massive daily ingestion engine that powers revenue management algorithms.

What You’ll Do

• Ensure robust, scalable, and highly optimized data pipelines for daily calendar syncing.
• Supervise and improve existing daily ingestion systems.
• Design and implement systems to integrate new data sources.
• Deliver ingested data efficiently into the core application.
• Act as a technical guardian for a multi-terabyte, highly dynamic dataset.
• Identify performance bottlenecks in distributed systems and implement effective solutions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of Data Engineering or Backend Engineering experience; 10+ years overall engineering experience at technology companies.
• Experience working with massive, high-velocity datasets (multi-TB scale).
• Deep relational database expertise, specifically PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora:
  • Tune databases
  • Optimize complex queries
  • Manage large-scale indexing
• Strong programming skills in Ruby and Ruby on Rails (or willingness to learn, backed by expert-level experience in a similar language such as Python).
• Job orchestration/background processing at scale using Resque and/or alternatives like Sidekiq/Celery.
• AWS DevOps & data engineering tooling:
  • AWS cloud services
  • Infrastructure provisioning with Terraform or CloudFormation
  • CI/CD pipelines
• Strong data modeling skills balancing fast ingestion with efficient querying.
• Demonstrated autonomy: communicate asynchronously and manage your own execution (“Remote DNA”).

Nice-to-Haves (Implied by Stack)

• Experience with Athena for analytics querying over large datasets.
