About the role
Role: Data Engineer, Payments
As a Data Engineer for Whatnot’s Payments domain, you’ll build and scale data systems that enable data-driven decision-making across the organization. You’ll partner with Payments and Finance stakeholders to design reliable data architectures, develop resilient pipelines, and deliver data products used for internal growth and external engagement.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end data architecture: define how critical payment/business data is captured, modeled, and served in production.
- Build and operate high-volume pipelines for streaming and batch event processing across domains (payments/transactions and related activity).
- Design canonical data models as authoritative sources for analytics, machine learning, and real-time applications.
- Enforce data quality and observability with monitoring, lineage, testing, and reconciliation so anomalies are actionable.
- Automate operational workflows to remove manual handoffs.
Requirements
- 3+ years experience as a data or software engineer working on data warehouses, distributed data systems, or event-driven architectures.
- Strong experience designing data models using dimensional modeling, Data Vault, or ledger-style approaches.
- Hands-on experience with modern data tooling including: Kafka, Debezium, dbt, Spark, Flink, Dagster, Airflow, Monte Carlo, Great Expectations.
- Experience with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift (schema design, workload tuning, and cost optimization).
- Strong Python and SQL skills; ability to integrate with CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate complex business needs into scalable technical solutions.
Nice to Have
- Outcome-oriented self-starter who excels in fast-paced environments with ambiguity.
