Data Engineer III (Wayvia)

Role overview

You will lead the development and maintenance of Wayvia’s data infrastructure and tooling. The goal is to ensure data integrity and availability while setting the strategic direction for data initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end data engineering work: design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of data pipelines.
• Prioritize and deliver multiple high-impact projects.
• Establish data quality standards, including:
  • Automated tests
  • Anomaly detection
  • Freshness SLAs
• Build and maintain dbt models, tests, and documentation for data quality and consistency.
• Identify infrastructure improvements to reduce cost, improve reliability, and remove single points of failure.
• Build and govern canonical dbt models in Snowflake using dimensional modeling to ensure consistent metrics and entity relationships.
• Own dbt model governance:
  • Standardize modeling patterns
  • Enforce testing/documentation requirements
  • Manage project structure across domains
• Maintain a consistent semantic layer (metric definitions, business logic, and entity relationships) aligned across BI, the MCP server, and AI consumers.
• Support Snowflake administration and Looker administration with the broader data platform team.

Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

• BS in Computer Science (or related) or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of data engineering experience, including building and maintaining ELT pipelines and dimensional data models in production.
• Experience integrating large-scale data from multiple sources.
• Advanced SQL skills (complex joins, CTEs).
• Strong hands-on Snowflake experience (admin experience a plus).
• Proficiency with dbt: production-grade model development, testing, documentation, and governance.
• Coding skills in Python, Java, or similar.
• Git-based version control and CI/CD for data infrastructure.
• Familiarity with orchestration (Airflow/Perfect/Dagster or similar).
• Demonstrated data ownership mindset (high bar for quality and reliability).

Preferred Qualifications

• Data observability and lineage tools.
• Experience with AI/ML.
• Experience building or contributing to a semantic layer/canonical data model with consistent metric and entity definitions across consumers.
• Looker development or administration experience.
• Background in e-commerce, retail analytics, or SaaS data platforms.
