About the role
Role Overview
You will work as a Data Engineer II at HelioCampus, helping architect and maintain a specialized higher education data warehouse. The goal is to ensure institutional data is reliable, high-performing, and delivered on time so university leaders can make informed decisions.
Responsibilities
- Develop: Design, build, and deploy robust ETL/ELT solutions using SQL and Python.
- Test & Deploy: Perform unit testing and participate in code reviews to protect data integrity and system reliability.
- Analyze: Monitor and evaluate pipeline performance trends to prevent bottlenecks and failures.
- Troubleshoot: Diagnose and resolve complex ETL issues in near real-time and identify root causes to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate: Partner with analysts and senior engineers to expand reporting models for evolving university goals.
Requirements
- Higher Education or EdTech experience.
- 3+ years of professional experience in ETL/SQL development and data engineering.
- Strong SQL skills (complex queries, data analysis, system integrations).
- Solid knowledge of data warehouse concepts and dimensional modeling.
- Experience with at least one object-oriented programming language, such as Python.
- Analytical, solution-oriented mindset and ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AWS tools such as Redshift, S3, and Glue (or other major cloud platforms).
- Exposure to NoSQL data transformation approaches.
- Ability to translate complex business requirements into technical SQL specifications.
Projects You’ll Work On
- Higher Ed Data Warehouse Expansion: Scale the core warehouse for new data sources and institutional partners.
- KPI Modeling: Refine and expand reporting models for student learning outcomes and financial sustainability.
- Pipeline Modernization: Optimize ETL processes using modern cloud-native features for faster processing.
Location / Work Setup
Primary role is remote, with occasional travel to the Bethesda, MD or Chapel Hill, NC office or client sites.
