Data Engineer (GCP, BigQuery)

Role Overview

Data Engineer (GCP, BigQuery) on the AI Engineering – Reporting and Analytics team. You’ll build and enhance data solutions and support AI initiatives for Applied’s insurance business, improving data architecture and access to large-scale datasets.

Responsibilities

• Write BigQuery stored procedures, functions, and other database objects using BigQuery SQL and ANSI SQL
• Build scalable, efficient data models in a data lake with a focus on BigQuery
• Manage and optimize data storage, including partitioning and clustering strategies for performance and reliability
• Develop and implement features/enhancements in BigQuery using SQL and cloud data warehousing expertise
• Collaborate with Principal Data Architect, Data Scientists, and Software Engineers to deliver solutions aligned with business goals, security, and data governance
• Create team documentation to support design discussions
• Ensure data integrity and quality with robust validation and error-handling
• Improve the end-to-end data lifecycle (from ingestion and ETL to reporting layers) to increase team productivity
• Stay current on industry trends and advancements in big data/data engineering

Requirements

• 3+ years building and maintaining cloud data solutions (data modeling and data engineering)
• Strong SQL and Python for working with data assets
• Proven experience with BigQuery and cloud-based data warehousing
• Experience managing and optimizing BigQuery and Google Cloud Platform data services
• Knowledge of Agile frameworks (ideally Scrum) and tools such as Jira and Confluence
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/MIS/CIS or equivalent experience

• Experience with data governance/security requirements for analytics and reporting
