Corporate Counsel (Legal Product, Intellectual Property, and Marketing)

Role Overview

Corporate Counsel specializing in legal product, intellectual property, and marketing at Elastic. You’ll work closely with product and engineering teams to support patent and IP strategy, open-source compliance, trademark and copyright matters, and legal responsibilities tied to AI governance.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Patent prosecution & innovation motions: support day-to-day patent prosecution; operate invention harvesting and patent intake programs.
• IP portfolio management: manage global patent, copyright, and trademark portfolios, including trademark monitoring/clearance, copyright registrations, and tracking filing/prosecution/renewal deadlines.
• Open-source licensing & compliance: manage day-to-day OSS licensing/compliance programs and ensure inbound third-party dependencies align with outbound strategy.
• AI governance & marketing-related legal support: contribute to legal responsibilities related to AI governance and trademark protection (and broader marketing legal needs as applicable).

Requirements

• Patent Bar: Admission to the US or Canadian Patent Bar (registration number required).
• Education: JD from a US law school or LLB from a Canadian law school preferred (patent agents eligible).
• Communication: excellent written and oral skills; ability to simplify complex legal/technical topics.
• Technical curiosity: interest in Generative AI and legal frameworks governing code/data.
• Patent proficiency: experience drafting, reviewing, or managing patent applications; ability to translate technical concepts into claims and legal analysis.
• Problem-solving: proactive self-starter; can prioritize multiple projects and adjust advice as priorities shift.
• Experience: 2–5+ years in patent prosecution and/or litigation and IP or product law; preferably with software industry exposure.
• Technical background: bachelor’s or advanced degree in science/engineering; software engineering background is a plus.
• Trade compliance aptitude: interest in learning trade compliance frameworks and analyzing export law; prior experience not required.
• Process mindset: desire to build and strengthen scalable legal workflows and “productization” processes.
• Global/distributed work: comfortable working across time zones and cultures.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience or academic background in software engineering.
• Exposure to SaaS, enterprise data platforms, and/or open-source products.
