Commercial & Product Counsel

Role overview

As Commercial & Product Counsel at Givebutter, you’ll lead the commercial contracting function end-to-end and partner with product teams to manage legal risk before launch. This is a high-ownership role where you build contracting infrastructure, negotiate key agreements, and use modern tools (including AI-powered contract review) to move quickly while protecting reputation and quality.

Key missions

• Own the commercial contracting process: negotiate and finalize contracts with vendors and customers.
• Build and maintain templates, playbooks, fallback language, and approval workflows; create self-serve tools for operational and commercial teams.
• Counsel product teams on legal risk prior to feature launches by identifying issues in product specifications.

Responsibilities

• Run the contracting motion independently (manage your queue, decide when to escalate).
• Provide clear guidance to non-legal stakeholders (Sales, PDE, Finance, Operations, People, and leadership).
• Negotiate high-volume agreements across multiple contexts (SaaS, vendor, customer, data processing).
• Develop contracting systems and infrastructure to increase speed and consistency.
• Use hands-on AI legal tooling (AI-powered contract review and/or agentic workflows).

Requirements

• Built contracting processes from scratch: templates/playbooks, approval workflows, self-serve tools.
• Strong product counseling skills: translate legal risk into plain language and propose paths forward that preserve product delivery.
• Deep commercial contracting experience negotiating hundreds of agreements across SaaS/vendor/customer/data processing.
• Hands-on experience with AI tools for legal work (AI contract review/agents/agentic workflows).
• 5–7 years legal experience with meaningful in-house time at a growth-stage fintech (payments or fundraising platform experience strongly preferred).
• J.D. and active bar membership in at least one US jurisdiction.
