Role overview

Cloud Engineer (Ruby/DevOps) at Newsmatics — a 100% remote DevOps-focused engineering role. You’ll help bring cloud infrastructure fully in-house, modernizing automation, monitoring, security, and deployment workflows.

What you’ll do

• Design and manage AWS infrastructure (e.g., EC2, S3, CloudFront, Aurora)
• Migrate from a mixed environment (partly on AWS + 50+ Rackspace Cloud servers) to a unified, automated, monitored setup
• Automate deployments with Ansible and streamline release workflows (Capistrano is a bonus)
• Optimize databases and performance (MySQL, Redis; Cassandra is being phased out)
• Build monitoring and alerting using tools like collectd, Grafana, Kuma (or your preferred tooling)
• Develop CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions
• Strengthen security-by-default practices
• Collaborate with other teams—especially if you bring additional skills in:
  • web/backend software engineering
  • data science/analytics
  • data engineering/pipelines
  • visualization and dashboards

Requirements

• 3–5+ years of hands-on DevOps experience
• Strong AWS expertise (certifications welcome)
• Proven Ansible mastery; Capistrano experience is a bonus
• Deep experience with MySQL/Redis and system optimization
• CI/CD automation experience (GitHub Actions preferred)
• Fluency in at least one scripting language: Ruby or Python

Nice to have / bonus

• Analytics/ML workflow or data processing experience
• Visualization and monitoring (e.g., Grafana, custom dashboards, D3)
• Passion for clean, maintainable code and cross-functional work
